Castor Oil for Hair Loss
Using castor oil for hair loss is one of the best thinning hair remedies. You have to apply cold-pressed castor oil to your scalp and massage. Viscosity of castor oil is very high whereby it coats hair completely and protects it against hair fall. It is also rich in vitamin E and fatty acids which are helpful in hair growth. Here’s the way you can use castor oil for your hair.
Mix castor oil and coconut oil in equal parts and heat the mixture. This way you can lessen the thickness of castor oil and also get the goodness of coconut oil. Apply the mixture to scalp and hair. While applying to the scalp, apply it in circular motions. Now comb hair and remove tangles to let the oil spread evenly throughout your hair. Moisten a towel in warm water and cover your hair with this towel. Leave for at least an hour. Clean hair with shampoo. Do this once a week.
Saw Palmetto for Hair Loss
Saw palmetto is being used as a food and medicine by Native Americans since ages. This is a plant having small berries which has been proved to treat hair loss, along with many other diseases like prostate cancer, bladder infections and reduced libido.
Though there is a limited amount of research on the effectiveness of saw palmetto for hair loss, it is quite promising. 5-alpha-reductase is an enzyme which transforms testosterone to DHT, which in turn causes hair loss. Saw palmetto has been found to block 5-alpha-reductase. The process through which this happens is similar to the way of working of prescription medicines for hair loss.
Amongst the limited studies conducted on the effectiveness of saw palmetto in treating hair loss, one study is remarkable, in which 6 out of 10 participants showed encouraging results. During this study, male participants with male pattern baldness were administered saw palmetto orally twice in a day for a few months. 6 participants found improvement in their condition.

Saw palmetto has been found to be usually safe. However, it should not be given to children. Rarely stomach pain and mild headaches may occur. Stomach pain doesn’t occur if you take the extract with food.

- Mix a tablespoon of amla (Indian gooseberry) powder and two tablespoons of coconut oil together and heat till it boils. Strain and massage into your scalp before retiring to bed. Next morning, wash hair with shampoo. Do it once in a week.
- One more way is to soak half a cup of amla powder for about 10 minutes into a quarter cup of warm water and then apply it to your hair. Let it settle for 15-20 minutes and then rinse. Do not shampoo. Do this every few weeks.

Egg for Hair Loss
We know that egg is a rich source of protein and hair is made of protein; therefore, regularly applying egg to hair is certainly beneficial. Here’s how you can apply eggs to stop and revert hair loss:
- You will need one or two eggs, as per the length of your hair. Beat the eggs completely. Wet hair and apply the beaten eggs on it. Let it settle for around half an hour. Rinse with a shampoo and lukewarm water. Do this once or twice in a week.
- You can also mix together yolk of one egg, one tablespoon of any hair oil of your liking and two tablespoon water. Mix thoroughly and massage into your scalp. Doing this once a week will offer you thicker hair.
Olive Oil for Thinning Hair
Olive oil is known to add volume to your hair. Moreover it will also strengthen and soften your locks.
Massage scalp as well as hair with warm olive oil. Leave for around 30 to 45 minutes. If you leave it overnight, it’s even better. Then wash out clean with a mild shampoo. Do this once or twice in a week.
Fenugreek Seeds for Hair Loss
Fenugreek seeds too are rich source of proteins. They strengthen hair roots and prevent hair fall. You can use them in two ways:
- Soak 2-3 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight or for 8-10 hours. In the morning, grind to a fine paste. If you want, two teaspoons of coconut milk too can be added to this paste. Then apply the paste to your scalp and hair and let it settle for approximately 30 minutes and then wash with lukewarm water. If done regularly in a week, you will get rid of dry scalp and enjoy thicker hair.
- Use the water in which you soaked the fenugreek seeds to rinse hair. This will add a shine to your locks. It will also reduce dandruff.
Vitamins for Thinning Hair
It has been rightly said that you are what you eat. If we eat right, we are alright. Hair loss too may be a problem caused by wrong eating habits. If you are deficient in a food ingredient you have to take that ingredient and your hair loss will be corrected. Vitamin deficiency can be at the base of your hair loss. And in that case you should take the required vitamins for thinning hair.
The vitamins related to your hair growth are biotin (a form of vitamin B) and vitamin D. If you want to find out if you are deficient in these two, you have to get your blood tests done. If you are found to be really deficient in these two vitamins, you can say that your hair loss is due to their lack and then you can start or increase their intake. Recommended dietary allowances (RDA) for vitamin D and biotin are 15 and 30 micrograms respectively per day. You can increase the intake of sardines, soybeans, egg yolks, whole grains, nuts, legumes and yeast for obtaining biotin, and fish, yogurt, milk, and eggs, for vitamin D. Getting enough sunlight is also necessary for vitamin D.
Here one thing should be mentioned while we are talking about vitamins for thinning hair, that daily intake of more than 10,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A can in fact cause hair loss.
Deficiency of some minerals too can cause hair loss. These are iron and zinc. Foods rich in these two are poultry, meat, seafood, breakfast cereals and legumes. Dairy products too are packed with zinc.
